2. QUOTATION
Our project manager will prepare a fully itemised, no-obligation quote. Because several members of our team have backgrounds in construction and quantity surveying, the quotes we produce are detailed and reliable — materials, labour, groundworks, drainage, and waste removal are all broken down clearly so you know exactly what you are paying for. There are no hidden extras. Once you are happy with the quote, we will schedule a start date that works around your diary.
3. SITE PREPARATION
This is the stage that separates a driveway built to last from one that sinks within twelve months. We begin by confirming the location of all below-ground services and marking out the driveway boundary. The existing surface — whether it is tarmac, concrete, or an old gravel drive — is then excavated to the required depth (typically around 250mm below the finished paving level). Any soft spots in the ground are dug out and backfilled with compacted material.
A geotextile weed membrane is laid to stabilise the ground and prevent the sub-base mixing with the earth beneath. We then spread and compact a minimum 150mm layer of crushed concrete and hardcore aggregate to form a solid, level base. Soakaway drainage and any necessary channel drains are installed at this point. Getting the sub-base right is non-negotiable — it is the foundation that everything else relies on.
4. BLOCK LAYING
With the sub-base compacted and levelled, we install any required manhole covers, drainage recesses, and concrete haunching before the blocks go down. Edge courses and kerbing are set first to define the driveway’s shape and hold the main body of paving firmly in place.
A sharp sand laying course is screeded over the sub-base, and then the block laying begins. Our team are experienced at precision cutting and alignment — whether you have opted for a 45-degree herringbone, a stretcher bond, or something more elaborate with mixed block sizes and feature inlays. Every paver is checked for line and level as the work progresses.
5. COMPLETION & HANDOVER
Once all the blocks are laid, kiln-dried jointing sand is brushed into the gaps and the entire surface is compacted with a vibrating plate to lock everything into position. Gully covers and recess trays are fitted, and the driveway is swept clean so you can see the finished result without any sand or debris in the way.
A member of our project management team then carries out a final walkthrough to check alignment, levels, drainage fall, and overall finish. We do not consider a job complete until we — and you — are satisfied with every detail.

TYPES OF BLOCK PAVING WE INSTALL
Concrete Block Paving
The workhorse of the paving world. Concrete pavers are manufactured from crushed stone, sand, and cement and come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colours. They are uniform in dimension, which means patterns like herringbone and stretcher bond are quick to lay and look clean. For residential driveways, 50mm-thick blocks are standard; commercial applications typically call for 60mm or thicker. Concrete blocks are the most budget-friendly option, though a quality sealant is recommended to protect against colour fade and oil absorption over time.
Clay Brick Paving
Clay bricks are kiln-fired at high temperatures, which gives them a rich, natural colour that holds up year after year — even in direct sunlight. They tend to cost more than concrete, but many homeowners feel the premium is justified by their longevity. Clay is a strong choice if you want warm reds, burnt oranges, or deep charcoal tones that will not wash out.
Natural Stone & Porcelain Pavers
For properties that call for something out of the ordinary, natural stone pavers — granite setts, sandstone, limestone — deliver a distinctive finish that is difficult to replicate with manufactured products. Porcelain paving has also gained ground in recent years thanks to its low porosity and resistance to staining. These materials sit at the higher end of the price range but can significantly increase property value.
Permeable Block Paving
Under current UK regulations, any new driveway over 5m² that uses impermeable materials requires planning permission unless adequate drainage provision is made. Permeable block paving sidesteps this requirement entirely. The pavers are designed with wider joints that allow rainwater to filter through into the sub-base and back into the ground — reducing surface water runoff, easing pressure on local drains, and helping you comply with SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) regulations without the need for a separate planning application.
DRAINAGE, COMPLIANCE & PLANNING
Since October 2008, paving over a front garden with an impermeable surface larger than 5m² requires planning permission — unless you make adequate provision for rainwater to drain to a permeable area within your property’s boundary. This rule was introduced to tackle the growing problem of surface water flooding in built-up areas across London and the South East.
We advise all our clients on the most practical drainage solution for their site. In many cases, permeable block paving is the simplest option: the pavers themselves allow water to filter through into the ground below, so no separate soakaway or channel drain system is needed and no planning application has to be filed.
Where standard (non-permeable) block paving is preferred, we incorporate linear channel drains, soakaways, or a gradient that directs surface water toward an existing lawn, border, or purpose-built drainage feature. Every installation we carry out is designed to comply with current SuDS regulations and local authority requirements.
We will assess your site conditions, soil type, and gradient during the initial consultation and recommend the drainage approach that makes the most sense — both practically and in terms of cost. Our aim is to make sure the finished driveway handles heavy rainfall without pooling, shifting, or causing problems for neighbouring properties.
