DRIVEWAYS IN BASILDON & ESSEX
DRIVEWAYS IN
BASILDON & ESSEX
A well-built driveway does more than give you somewhere to park. It adds genuine value to your property and, done right, needs very little ongoing upkeep. In Basildon and across Essex, ground conditions vary — much of the area sits on heavy London Clay that shifts with the seasons — so getting the sub-base preparation right is not something you can afford to get wrong.
Ideal Landscapes is a family-owned driveway contractor based in Essex, with over 15 years of experience installing driveways throughout Basildon, Wickford, Billericay, and the surrounding areas. We work with block paving, resin bound, tarmac, and natural stone, giving you a proper range of surfacing options to match your property and your budget.
Every project is managed and carried out by our own team from start to finish — we do not use subcontractors, and we do not cut corners on materials or preparation. We handle the full scope of works: excavation, drainage, sub-base preparation, and the laying itself. That means one team, one point of contact, and full accountability for the finished result.

WHY INVEST IN A NEW DRIVEWAY?
Most driveways across Basildon and south Essex sit on London Clay — a heavy, reactive soil that shrinks in dry spells and swells when saturated. Over time, this seasonal ground movement causes older surfaces to crack, sink, and become uneven. Concrete slabs split. Tarmac dips. Paving laid without a proper sub-base starts to shift and separate.
A professionally installed driveway tackles these issues from the ground up. We excavate to the correct depth, compact a MOT Type 1 aggregate sub-base in layers, and lay a geotextile membrane to suppress weed growth and add structural stability. This is the part of the job most people never see — but it is the part that determines whether a driveway lasts five years or twenty-five.
Block paving remains the most widely chosen option for residential driveways in Basildon, and there are solid reasons for that. The individual blocks interlock to form a strong, load-bearing surface that flexes with ground movement rather than cracking under pressure. Should a block become damaged — or should you need access to services or pipework underneath — single units can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the rest of the drive.
We also install resin bound driveways, which provide a smooth, contemporary finish and are fully SuDS compliant — meaning rainwater drains through the surface rather than running off into the road. For homeowners who want a clean, hard-wearing finish at a more competitive price point, tarmac remains a dependable option. During your consultation, we will walk you through the advantages and limitations of each material so you can make an informed decision.

1. CONSULTATION
We begin by visiting your property to understand what is involved. During this initial meeting, we measure the proposed driveway area, assess the condition of the existing surface and the ground beneath it, and talk through what you want from the finished result.
If you have a particular design in mind — a herringbone layout, a circular feature, specific colours — we will work with it. If you are still deciding, we can suggest layouts, patterns, and materials based on what will complement your property and the surrounding streetscape. We carry sample brochures from the UK’s leading block paving and surfacing manufacturers, so you can see and handle the actual products before making a commitment.
Ideal Landscapes works with established suppliers across the south-east, which means you will have plenty of options when it comes to materials, colours, and finishes. Whether you favour moulded concrete blocks, kiln-fired clay pavers, natural stone, or resin bound aggregate, we can source it.
We also check the position of underground services — water, gas, electric, and telecoms — to make certain there will be no complications once the groundwork gets under way. Our consultations are completely free and carry no obligation whatsoever.

2. QUOTATION
Our project manager will prepare a detailed, written quotation that breaks down the cost of materials, labour, skip hire, and any additional works such as dropped kerb applications or drainage installation. There are no hidden charges. Because our team has a background in construction and quantity surveying, the figures we provide tend to be accurate from the outset. Once you have accepted the quote and are happy to proceed, we schedule a start date that works around you.
3. SITE PREPARATION
We mark out the driveway area and begin excavating to the required depth — typically between 200mm and 250mm for a standard residential driveway, though this can vary depending on ground conditions and the weight the surface needs to support. If an existing driveway is in place, it will be broken up, removed, and disposed of in line with current waste regulations.
A geotextile membrane is then laid across the excavated area to prevent weed growth and provide additional stability. The sub-base — usually MOT Type 1 crushed stone aggregate — is laid in stages and compacted thoroughly using a plate vibrator. This process is repeated until the base is completely solid, level, and ready to receive the surface material. On sites with poor drainage, we also install channels or soakaways to manage surface water.
4. BLOCK LAYING
Edge restraints are installed first to define the perimeter and stop blocks from creeping outward over time. We then lay a sharp sand screed bed over the compacted sub-base before placing the blocks in your chosen pattern.
Herringbone is the layout we recommend most often for driveways carrying regular vehicle traffic — the interlocking arrangement distributes weight effectively and holds firm under repeated use. We also lay stretcher bond, basketweave, and circular feature designs. Once all blocks are in position, kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and the whole surface is compacted with a plate vibrator to lock everything firmly in place.
5. COMPLETION
Before we leave site, we carry out a thorough final inspection to ensure every detail meets our standards. Manhole covers, drainage gullies, and recess trays are all fitted flush with the finished surface. Any excess sand and building debris is cleared away so you can see the driveway in its completed state.
One of our project managers walks the full driveway and signs off the work before we hand it over. If anything falls short — a block that has not seated properly, an edge restraint that needs adjusting — we deal with it on the spot. We do not leave a project until it is right.
